On this page, the deletion or merging of templates and modules, except as noted below, is discussed. To propose the renaming of a template or templates, use Wikipedia:Requested moves.

How to use this pageEdit

What not to propose for discussion hereEdit

The majority of deletion and merger proposals concerning pages in the template namespace and module namespace should be listed on this page. However, there are a few exceptions:

Stub templates
Stub templates and categories should be listed at Categories for discussion, as these templates are merely containers for their categories, unless the stub template does not come with a category and is being nominated by itself.
Userboxes should be listed at Miscellany for deletion, regardless of the namespace in which they reside.
Speedy deletion candidates
If the template clearly satisfies a "general" or "template" criterion for speedy deletion, tag it with a speedy deletion template. For example, if you wrote the template and request its deletion, tag it with {{Db-author}}. If it is a hardcoded instance or duplication of another template, tag it with {{Db-t3|~~~~~|name of other template}}.
Policy or guideline templates
Templates that are associated with particular Wikipedia policies or guidelines, such as the speedy deletion templates, cannot be listed at TfD separately. They should be discussed on the talk page of the relevant guideline.
Template redirects
List at Redirects for discussion.

Reasons to delete a templateEdit

  1. The template violates some part of the template namespace guidelines, and can't be altered to be in compliance.
  2. The template is redundant to a better-designed template (see also: WP:Infobox consolidation).
  3. The template is not used, either directly or by template substitution (the latter cannot be concluded from the absence of backlinks), and has no likelihood of being used.
  4. The template violates a policy such as Neutral point of view or Civility and it can't be fixed through normal editing.

Templates should not be nominated if the issue can be fixed by normal editing. Instead, you should edit the template to fix its problems. If the template is complex and you don't know how to fix it, WikiProject Templates may be able to help.

Templates for which none of these apply may be deleted by consensus here. If a template is being misused, consider clarifying its documentation to indicate the correct use, or informing those that misuse it, rather than nominating it for deletion. Initiate a discussion on the template talk page if the correct use itself is under debate.

Listing a templateEdit

To list a template for deletion or merging, follow this three-step process. Note that the "Template:" prefix should not be included anywhere when carrying out these steps (unless otherwise specified).

Step Instructions
I: Tag the template. Add one of the following codes to the top of the template page:

  • If the template nominated is inline, do not add a newline between the Tfd notice and the code of the template.
  • If the template to be nominated for deletion is protected, make a request for the Tfd tag to be added, by posting on the template's talk page and using the {{editprotected}} template to catch the attention of administrators or Template editors.
  • For templates designed to be substituted, add <noinclude>...</noinclude> around the Tfd notice to prevent it from being substituted alongside the template.
  • Do not mark the edit as minor.
  • Use an edit summary like
Nominated for deletion; see [[Wikipedia:Templates for discussion#Template:name of template]]
Nominated for merging; see [[Wikipedia:Templates for discussion#Template:name of template]].
  • Before saving your edit, preview your edit to ensure the Tfd message is displayed properly.

Multiple templates: If you are nominating multiple related templates, choose a meaningful title for the discussion (like "American films by decade templates"). Tag every template with {{subst:Tfd|heading=discussion title}} or {{subst:Tfm|name of other template|heading=discussion title}} instead of the versions given above, replacing discussion title with the title you chose (but still not changing the PAGENAME code).

Related categories: If including template-populated tracking categories in the Tfd nomination, add {{Catfd|template name}} to the top of any categories that would be deleted as a result of the Tfd, this time replacing template name with the name of the template being nominated. (If you instead chose a meaningful title for a multiple nomination, use {{Catfd|header=title of nomination}} instead.)

TemplateStyles pages: The above templates will not work on TemplateStyles pages. Instead, add a CSS comment to the top of the page:

/* This template is being discussed in accordance with Wikipedia's deletion policy. Help reach a consensus at its entry: for discussion/Log/2020_November_29#Template:template_name.css */
II: List the template at Tfd. Follow this link to edit today's Tfd log.

Add this text at the top, just below the -->:

  • For deletion: {{subst:Tfd2|template name|text=Why you think the template should be deleted. ~~~~}}
  • For merging: {{subst:Tfm2|template name|other template's name|text=Why you think the templates should be merged. ~~~~}}

If the template has had previous Tfds, you can add {{Oldtfdlist|previous Tfd without brackets|result of previous Tfd}} directly after the Tfd2/Catfd2 template.

Use an edit summary such as
Adding [[Template:template name]].

Multiple templates: If this is a deletion proposal involving multiple templates, use the following:

{{subst:Tfd2|template name 1|template name 2 ...|title=meaningful discussion title|text=Why you think the templates should be deleted. ~~~~}}

You can add up to 50 template names (separated by vertical bar characters | ). Make sure to include the same meaningful discussion title that you chose before in Step 1.

If this is a merger proposal involving more than two templates, use the following:

{{subst:Tfm2|template name 1|template name 2 ...|with=main template (optional)|title=meaningful discussion title|text=Why you think the templates should be merged. ~~~~}}

You can add up to 50 template names (separated by vertical bar characters | ), plus one more in |with=. |with= does not need to be used, but should be the template that you want the other templates to be merged into. Make sure to include the same meaningful discussion title that you chose before in Step 1.

Related categories: If this is a deletion proposal involving a template and a category populated solely by templates, add this code after the Tfd2 template but before the text of your rationale:

{{subst:Catfd2|category name}}
III: Notify users. Please notify the creator of the template nominated (as well as the creator of the target template, if proposing a merger). It is helpful to also notify the main contributors of the template that you are nominating. To find them, look in the page history or talk page of the template. Then, add one of the following:

to the talk pages of the template creator (and the creator of the other template for a merger) and the talk pages of the main contributors. It is also helpful to make any interested WikiProjects aware of the discussion. To do that, make sure the template's talk page is tagged with the banners of any relevant WikiProjects; please consider notifying any of them that do not use Article alerts.

Multiple templates: There is no template for notifying an editor about a multiple-template nomination: please write a personal message in these cases.

Consider adding any templates you nominate for Tfd to your watchlist. This will help ensure that the Tfd tag is not removed.

After nominating: Notify interested projects and editorsEdit

While it is sufficient to list a template for discussion at TfD (see above), nominators and others sometimes want to attract more attention from and participation by informed editors. All such efforts must comply with Wikipedia's guideline against biased canvassing.

To encourage participation by less experienced editors, please avoid Wikipedia-specific abbreviations in the messages you leave about the discussion, link to any relevant policies or guidelines, and link to the TfD discussion page itself. If you are recommending that an template be speedily deleted, please give the criterion that it meets, such as "T3" for hardcoded instances.

Notifying related WikiProjectsEdit

WikiProjects are groups of editors that are interested in a particular subject or type of editing. If the article is within the scope of one or more WikiProjects, they may welcome a brief, neutral note on their project's talk page(s) about the TfD. You can use {{Tfdnotice}} for this.

Tagging the nominated template's talk page with a relevant Wikiproject's banner will result in the template being listed in that project's Article Alerts automatically, if they subscribe to the system. For instance, tagging a template with {{WikiProject Physics}} will list the discussion in Wikipedia:WikiProject Physics/Article alerts.

Notifying substantial contributors to the templateEdit

While not required, it is generally considered courteous to notify the good-faith creator and any main contributors of the template and its talkpage that you are nominating for discussion. To find the creator and main contributors, look in the page history or talk page.

At this point, you've done all you need to do as nominator. Sometime after seven days have passed, someone else will either close the discussion or, where needed, "relist" it for another seven days of discussion. (That "someone" may not be you, the nominator.)

Once you have submitted a template here, no further action is necessary on your part. If the nomination is supported, helpful administrators and editors will log the result and ensure that the change is implemented to all affected pages.

Also, consider adding any templates you nominate to your watchlist. This will help ensure that your nomination tag is not mistakenly or deliberately removed.

Twinkle is a convenient tool that can perform many of the functions of notification automatically. Twinkle does not notify WikiProjects, although many of them have automatic alerts. It is helpful to notify any interested WikiProjects that don't receive alerts, but this has to be done manually.

Anyone can join the discussion, but please understand the deletion policy and explain your reasoning.

People will sometimes also recommend subst or subst and delete and similar. This means the template text should be "merged" into the articles that use it. Depending on the content, the template page may then be deleted; if preserving the edit history for attribution is desirable, it may be history-merged with the target article or moved to mainspace and redirected.

Templates are rarely orphaned—that is, removed from pages that transclude them—before the discussion is closed. A list of open discussions eligible for closure can be found at Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Old unclosed discussions.

Closing discussionEdit

Administrators should read the closing instructions before closing a nomination. Note that WP:XFDCloser semi-automates this process and ensures all of the appropriate steps are taken.

Current discussionsEdit

November 29Edit

Tagged "This page is currently inactive and is retained for historical reference." since 2015, but still used on 85 user pages (mostly those of long-absent users). Keeping it for "historical reference" serves no useful purpose. If not deleted, it should be removed from those pages; or the content wrapped with noinclude Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 12:57, 29 November 2020 (UTC)

Template:Infobox T&W Metro stationEdit

Propose merging the above into Template:Infobox station.
Proposing merging these two low-usage UK railway station templates into {{Infobox station}}, which follows the July discussion that merged the main GB railway templates.

Sample converts of these templates can be seen in my sandbox, User:ProcrastinatingReader/sandbox2. I think these look much 'prettier'; Heworth_Interchange#Metro is a bit of a mess and the templates horribly out of date.

Data is carried over with two exceptions: "Distance from datum" on the T&W template, which is pretty much trivia especially for an infobox, and "[number of] Escalators", same reason. As for styling changes, consensus from the GB station merge & post-merge discussions should apply, for example the A-Z "List to stations" will be removed. To accommodate for colours on the Manchester set, a Module:Adjacent stations system will be created (already done for T&W at Module:Adjacent stations/Tyne and Wear Metro). For remaining points, see sandbox mockup. ProcrastinatingReader (talk) 23:41, 28 November 2020 (UTC)

  • Support: There is no need to have separate infobox templates for two small systems. I agree with the removal of the two trivia parameters. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 00:03, 29 November 2020 (UTC)
  • Support, these two templates have no significant differences in functionality. Cards84664 02:47, 29 November 2020 (UTC)
  • Support - Don't see any good reason to have the infoboxes be seperate, and the proposed converts seem OK. Jumpytoo Talk 09:57, 29 November 2020 (UTC)

Template:Balance of Power tracksEdit

Track listing templates are typically reserved for albums that have articles on the majority, if not all, of its songs. Template:Most-produced aircraftEdit

Nominated for discussion and possible deletion here following an initial discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Aircraft#Template:Most-produced aircraft. Essentially this falls afoul of WP:INDISCRIMINATE and the concerns brought up in the essay Wikipedia:Avoid template creep, plus it duplicates the article we already have: List of most-produced aircraft. Template:Infobox US Supreme Court caseEdit

Seems to be an unused fork of Template:Infobox court case modified slightly for SCOTUS cases. I presume creator wasn't aware at the time that Template:Infobox SCOTUS case exists.

Template:Friendly tournaments 2021Edit

WP:TOOSOON for this navbox; only one known tournament linked. Jalen Folf (talk) 05:48, 28 November 2020 (UTC)

This is an unnecessary template and was previously deleted as a duplicated template in early 2019. Requested speedy deletion but was contested by creator. What should have been done is a discussion on recreating the HBO template, as what the creator effectively did was recreate a duplicated template with a few more articles, a few plain text names (should be avoided), an executives, defunct and former ventures, and a miscellaneous sections — this could have been added to the HBO section of the WarnerMedia Studios & Networks template that it is part of (have added the rest there except the executives with it being part of WarnerMedia), and there is the problem of having too many templates. The Defunct and former ventures section is problematic in that there is information that belongs in the article which would have references to support it, whereas this is a navbox for navigating. Steven (Editor) (talk) 23:45, 19 November 2020 (UTC)

  • Response: AFAIK, as a frequent viewer and editor of the HBO article, I have never seen a dedicated template regarding the network in the timeframe he claims. The template was created close to two months prior, based on reasoning similar to that behind the creation of other television-network-specific templates (or technically, in this case, operating unit) that focus on their multinational corporate structure (e.g., Template:BBC, Template:ESPN, Template:Nickelodeon); I'm not sure how the ones cited have better basis to stand compared to this, especially considering HBO has as widespread an asset portfolio as the cited networks. The editor tagging the template for deletion (whose edits to the HBO and WarnerMedia templates appear to be among the only non-school-focused edits in his contribution history) also severely undermined his case, as he had copied and pasted the entire structure of Template:HBO into Template:WarnerMedia Studios & Networks (compare the section from this version in September to the current section layout); some of the HBO template's content wasn't included in the WarnerMedia template beforehand, including a list of former properties operated by Home Box Office Inc. that would normally not be included in a template for media conglomerates like WarnerMedia due to their strict focus on properties currently under their purview. An alternative solution I had was to embed the HBO template as a WarnerMedia child template (e.g., how the Warner Bros. template is already structured), but the editor rejected the idea offhand and repasted its contents... this was after another user overseeing a prior speedy deletion request deemed that request insufficient to stand. Moreso, the editor twice chose to remove the template from all HBO-related articles (including HBO and Home Box Office, Inc.) in breach of standard protocol that usually allows a template marked for possible deletion to stay on its accordant article(s) until a decision to delete occurs. Much of the issues cited by the editor appear to be bureaucratic in nature, than based on standard WP content rules. TVTonightOKC (talk) 12:27, 20 November 2020 (UTC)
See the deletion log. You recreated the template two months ago. Wrong, you copied what was listed in the HBO section of the WarnerMedia Studios & Networks template and added further content when you could have just added it to this template instead of recreating the HBO one (re-read my description above!). Contribution history is irrelevant (it's more than that, but schools is my main focus at present), this is an encyclopedia. If fact, you were the editor that caused a mess with the WarnerMedia related templates! You contested the speedy deletion. There isn't that much to add for HBO to require a standalone template. I removed the template after moving the rest of the content into the HBO section of the WarnerMedia Studios & Networks template — the problem we had in articles is unnecessary duplication of articles in the two templates — why need two when it can be sufficiently covered by the one? Steven (Editor) (talk) 19:54, 20 November 2020 (UTC)
Again, coming from a repeat editor of articles relating to HBO and its sister assets, I had no knowledge of the existence of an HBO template existing previously. None of the content was copied from the WarnerMedia Studios and Networks template, but was sourced from the Home Box Office, Inc. asset list. The double-bracket was the only format error, which I fixed, and I tried to format the treeing of the HBO template in a manner that avoided such errors. Under WP rules, the creator of a tagged template/article has the right to contest speedy deletion, if they disagree with the reasoning behind it, since they can't remove the speedy deletion notice themselves. Also, considering HBO has several current and defunct services that have operated worldwide, the claim "there's nothing much to add" would seemingly invalidate the the other network-specific templates I cited, since Template:ESPN has duplication with Template:Disney and Template:Nickelodeon has duplication with Template:ViacomCBS by that logic, but both have been able to stand because other editors have expressed no issue with their existence. Sections like "Defunct and former ventures" and "Miscellaneous" that were in the HBO template would not normally be included in templates for most media conglomerates like WarnerMedia because the focus is typically and strictly on the existing company assets. Treeing Template:HBO into Template:WarnerMedia Studios & Networks (as the Warner Bros. template is already) would have been much more sufficient to address your "duplication" claim rather than deleting the former entirely. Template:Many imagesEdit

This template would be highly disruptive if transcluded across every article with a large number of images, adding noise to the top of very many articles. The suggestion that people with slow internet connections shouldn't read certain articles is bizarre; Wikipedia is supposed to be accessible to all. It is also useless in that anyone who can see it is already loading the large number of images so it is too late for them to turn back anyway.

Users who do struggle from slow internet connections may limit the size of thumbnails in their preferences. User:GKFXtalk 21:43, 27 November 2020 (UTC)

Then the solution is to make them more distinct, if desired. Otherwise, there is no maintenance improvement by wording these two warning messages. Template:DriverDB driverEdit

This template has created a linkfarm with more than 1000 external links to a commercial website that appears to lack notability. This links appear to advertise a commercial website. Jtbobwaysf (talk) 06:00, 26 November 2020 (UTC)

  • Keep. That is not what a "linkfarm" is, a statistical database that is linked to does not require any form of notability, and is not "advertising" in the slightest. The nominator posted on the template talk page and I asked for clarification by what they meant by the template being "abusive", and they did not reply, instead going straight to a deletion nomination instead of having their concerns addressed via discussion, which seems both premature and indicates a lack of understanding of how Wikipedia works. The purpose of this template is to link racing drivers' pages to the statistical database at driver-database, which is a well-established and respected statistical database for racing drivers. Propose mergingredirecting Template:Lang-he-n to Template:Lang-he.
This was proposed on the talkpage in 2010 and in 2015. The latter discussion was closed as "Nominate it for a merge at TFD", which was never done. The reasons remain the same: {{Lang-he}} is perfectly capable of showing niqqud, so this template is superfluous. In addition there are two problems with this template: 1. the one raised in this talkpage discussion, that this template is meant for text in the Hebrew language, but transcludes another template which is specifically meant for Hebrew script which is not actually in the Hebrew language. 2. the fact that it uses another font than {{Lang-he}} makes it stand out (although that can be changed by changing the fonts in Template:Script/styles hebrew.css, I guess), and also makes it more prone to change (like what happened after this edit, as can be seen in this talkpage discussion). The second problem is not much of an issue, of course, but still. Debresser (talk) 09:49, 25 November 2020 (UTC)

I invited all editors whom the template history showed to have edited this template more than incidentally to comment here. Debresser (talk) 16:33, 25 November 2020 (UTC)

  • I support this, this is probably legacy template from the early days of Wikipedia when Unicode was poorly supported and templates sometimes needed to nudge the browser into choosing the right font. This is no longer necessary, the "lang" templates should mark strings as in sa specific language regardless of the font used (i.e it should be possible/recommended to use lang-he even for transliterated Hebrew, or for Hebrew written in Paleo-Hebrew/Pheonician characters). --dab (𒁳) 12:02, 25 November 2020 (UTC)
  • It is not clear to me what 'merging' means in this case? Here are comparisons of {{lang-he-n}} and {{lang-he}}
  • Hebrewבֵּית‎, lit. home
  • Hebrew: בֵּית‎, lit. 'home'
  • [[Hebrew language|Hebrew]]:&nbsp;'"`UNIQ--templatestyles-0000002E-QINU`"'<span class="script-hebrew" style="font-size: 115%; " dir="rtl">בֵּית</span>&lrm;, ''[[literal translation|lit.]]''&nbsp;home
  • [[Hebrew language|Hebrew]]: <span lang="he" dir="rtl">בֵּית</span>&lrm;, <small>[[Literal translation|lit.]]&nbsp;</small>&#39;home&#39;
The obvious differences are:
{{lang-he-n}} uses {{script/Hebrew}}; {{lang-he}} does not
{{lang-he-n}} does not have a lang=he html attribute
{{lang-he-n}} italicizes the linked static text 'lit.'
{{lang-he-n}} does not render the value assigned to |lit= as a linguistic gloss (not wrapped in single quotes)
If the proposal is to merge some or all of these differences into {{lang-he}}, then I will have to oppose because Module:Lang should not be tweaked to support exceptions to the style it applies to the renderings of all of the other {{lang-??}} templates.
Trappist the monk (talk) 14:18, 25 November 2020 (UTC)
  • @Trappist the monk: I meant redirecting or replacing. Debresser (talk) 16:35, 25 November 2020 (UTC)
I can support replacement of {{lang-he-n}}, wherever it exists, with {{lang-he}}. Since you apparently do not mean that these templates should be merged, it would probably be best to change the {{tfd links}} templates and bolded text at the top of this discussion and to also change the {{Tfm/dated}} template at {{lang-he-n}}.
Trappist the monk (talk) 17:20, 25 November 2020 (UTC)
  • Partially support. At a minimum, they should both have a lang=he html attribute, both support |label=none, both support |lit= and should both document all parameters and all differences in rendering and semantics.
What about {{rtl-lang|he}}? Shmuel (Seymour J.) Metz Username:Chatul (talk) 15:07, 25 November 2020 (UTC)
  • Support, I should like to point out that the font of the lang-he template is, in my opinion, much better the the font font of lang-he-n which is unnecessary flamboyant. Ibn Daud (talk) 15:14, 25 November 2020 (UTC)
  • Comment after 4 editors expressed their opinion There are a lot of cases where this template is used even though there is no niqqud. See e.g. today's edit. That could be considered a third reason for redirecting. Debresser (talk) 16:31, 25 November 2020 (UTC)
Very much support. Would cause fewer headaches for people deciding on which one they should be using, and lang-he-n is most certainly redundant anyway. Stephen Walch (talk) 18:23, 25 November 2020 (UTC)
  • Replace uses of {{lang-he-n}} with {{lang-he}} and delete lang-he-n as it won't be a helpful redirect at all. --Gonnym (talk) 00:04, 26 November 2020 (UTC)
I agree that after the replacement, {{Lang-he-n}} can be deleted. Debresser (talk) 11:49, 26 November 2020 (UTC)
  • Support I suspect lang-he-n is now only used as a stylistic preference because of the font in which it renders the Hebrew (which is, admitedly, probably slightly easier to read the niqqud). There have been IPs (not sure if it's the same person) changing lang-he to lang-he-n for years, I would guess for this reason. Number 57 17:51, 27 November 2020 (UTC)
I agree with you regaridng the fon;t. I personally also prefer the font of Lang-he-n over the Lang-he font, which is less classical and more modern. Debresser (talk) 16:53, 28 November 2020 (UTC)

Each template was transcluded to two articles (their respective season article and a List of Episodes article), but per MOS:TV standards, the templates were merged ([1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8]) into their respective season article, and then those tables transcluded ([9]) from the season articles to the List of Episodes article. Not necessarily original research. Also it isn't directly making editors pick and choose "notable protests". The Portal:Current events and Current Event WikiProject (As of April 2020) decided the notability on protests. There are standards that are put in place. In short, those protests were listed sometime on the Portal:Current events, so they had to have been notable at one point in time. Elijahandskip (talk) 19:24, 16 November 2020 (UTC)

Obsolete community sanctions templatesEdit

These templates were superseded/cleaned up a few months ago. Some are totally unused/redundant now (eg Template:Blockchain notification or Template:Uw-castewarning, as duplicates of {{Gs/alert}}), others were turned into temporary wrappers around {{Gs/talk notice}}/{{Gs/editnotice}} (eg Template:MJ sanctions), etc. They have no clear structure. Proposing to delete all these (in cases of appropriate replacement, first replacing usages with direct template - eg {{MJ sanctions}} -> {{Gs/talk notice|mj}}). Some are here for "historical purposes" like {{AbortionGSEN}}, but since this would've been superseded by {{Gs/editnotice}} anyway, so I don't see any historical purpose in keeping them. Some like Template:Gs/Ecig notification are basically single-usage (log page) duplicates of Template:Gs/superseded, so should be replaced or substed. Covid is a mix of -> {{Gs/editnotice}} and this. Naming of these templates is all inconsistent, as well, and I don't think it's useful to keep an obscurely/arbitrarily worded set of wrapper templates. Standardised templates can be found in Category:Standardised Wikipedia community-authorised general sanctions templates. ProcrastinatingReader (talk) 18:47, 3 November 2020 (UTC)

  • Delete all: Recently I noticed that a user had received a notice of the WP:GS/IRANPOL sanctions in May 2020 but the notice had not set the tag 'discretionary sanctions alert' in their edit history. After asking a couple of people I concluded that the notice was given using one of the obsolete templates which doesn't trigger Edit Filter 602 to give the new-style notice. That filter tags the edit in the history, and it is the one used by Arbcom to handle their DS alerts. Tagging the history is the way of knowing whether a user has been properly notified within the past year, and it replaces the use of a manually-maintained log of notices. Agree with User:ProcrastinatingReader that GS notices from now should be given using the updated templates in Category:Standardised Wikipedia community-authorised general sanctions templates. Finding the right template to use may be helped by viewing Template:Gs/topics/table which is the current sanction table. EdJohnston (talk) 05:38, 10 November 2020 (UTC)

  • Replace with a transcluded version of the applicable standard template (effectively a redirect). Delete any for which that isn't applicable (e.g. if the community sanctions are no longer in place). I can't really see a strong reason to remove them entirely, change the template on talk pages and editnotices, and also retrain everyone to use a different template. Absolutely change them to the standard versions but keep the current template names if it's is still in use (e.g. for the SCW&ISIL talk notice). Callanecc (talkcontribslogs) 09:14, 22 November 2020 (UTC)
I mean, they can be converted to subst-only wrappers and have a bot subst them, but keeping them has a few issues, namely increased maintenance burden, especially if any parameters are to be changed they all have to be edited, limitation of number of restrictions that can be used, and my pet peeve that this is all a dog's dinner. I don't personally see the point verses just converting these all once and be done with them. ProcrastinatingReader (talk) 09:29, 22 November 2020 (UTC)
  • I'd like to deprecate them all unless there's a good reason that the contents of the templates is inappropriate for continued public access. To that end we should replace each of them with a {{error}} while keeping the history intact. ProcrastinatingReader makes a good argument as to why we shouldn't make them subst-only wrappers (which is my second choice), but I would much prefer to retain the public history while helping people switch over to {{gs/alert}} over outright deleting the templates here. No reason to have this-most times it's a good-faith mistake. This is WP: BITEy. HurricaneTracker495 (talk) 19:07, 22 November 2020 (UTC)

Keep Yes, most times it is a good-faith mistake and then this template does not apply. But that is no reason to remove the template entirely. It is not biting the newbies to have a template to use against egregious abuse or trolling; WP:BITE might apply if the template were used against a good-faith new user, but like all the other 4im templates, there are times when it is appropriate to place it. --bonadea contributions talk 20:09, 22 November 2020 (UTC)
If that were the case, we'd have uw-unsourced4im. Egregious unsourced editing can also happen. Or uw-subtle4im. uw-vandalism4im is in egregious cases as in other 4im templates. No case can possibly be this egregious when uw-unsourced4im isn't. --HurricaneTracker495 (talk) 21:04, 22 November 2020 (UTC)
The 4im warning series tends to focus on harassment and personal attacks against other editors, egregious spam, and serious BLP violations. If you identify other kinds of vandalism that could require a 4im warning, you can always request that it be created. Again, there are certainly cases of egregious vandalism of others' talk page comments, such that this template is appropriate. You only have to check the edits of users who have received a 4im tpv warning to see that. --bonadea contributions talk 21:40, 22 November 2020 (UTC)
Please show me two examples. HurricaneTracker495 (talk) 23:00, 22 November 2020 (UTC)
  • Keep Misuse of the template does not justify its deletion. Its purpose is quite clear. There are some obvious times when people cross the line and they need to be notified when their behavior is obviously unsatisfactory. We do not need to go through the four-level warning system for the most obvious cases. This template should be deployed only in the most extreme cases, but anytime it's used when it's unnecessary and an incivility in its own right is not grounds for deleting it. I also find it unlikely this would be deployed for a user's first identifiable offense; I'd think it'd most likely apply for users with a troublesome history but with no recent warning headings to follow up on. Zeke, the Mad Horrorist (Speak quickly) (Follow my trail) 03:34, 23 November 2020 (UTC)
  • Keep: Usable in egregious cases such as replacing a talk page with obscenities or other talk page blanking vandalism. They stop what they are doing because they might want to see how much they can get away with before crossing the line. Two or three weeks later.... they go and do a single stupid thing. Rather than go warn them again this template saves the time before going to ANI or whatnot. - Knowledgekid87 (talk) 02:18, 24 November 2020 (UTC)

Module:Sports color/ice hockeyEdit

Propose deleting unused module, which was recreated in August 2020. The same module was deleted back in July 2018. In addition, a consensus to use/create it was never reached (nor now, nor in 2018), for example, Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Ice Hockey/Archive76#New wiki-code templates for all 32 NHL ice hockey teams, because WP:NHL uses a different approach regarding teams' colors. Sabbatino (talk) 18:47, 22 November 2020 (UTC)

Template:Infobox Norway kommuneEdit

Replace/Substitute with {{Infobox settlement}} nothing special what isn't handled by {{Infobox settlement}}, only few inclusions. It is the only country-specific wrapper template for entities in the area of the Nordic Council. The template is named "Norway kommune" differing from the type in the infoboxe which are given as "municipality" or "former municipality". List of municipalities of Norway claims that as of 2020 Norway has 356 municipalities and that in 1930 there were 747. List of former municipalities of Norway claims that in 1958 there were 744. Whatlinkshere shows 675 transclusions. Percentage calculation using preceding numbers gives 365/675=0.54, that is only at most 54% of the transclusions are on pages about current entities. Information like timezone=Central European Time and ISO code are hard coded, there is no evidence provided it is correct for former municipalities. ISO 3166-2 was first published in 1998 and there is no evidence at ISO 3166-2:NO that codes for previous entities have been published, actually no evidence that any code for any Norway municipality has been published. The number of extant municipalities is similar to that of extant municipalities in neighboring Finland for which Template:Infobox Finnish municipality existed but has recently been replaced/substituted with {{Infobox settlement}} and then been deleted [10]. • Keep. It is based on infobox settlement and it is used on several hundred pages. It specific to the country and automatically calls maps, coats of arms images, as well as reference data about written language form and demonyms. The template is well-maintained and correct. It should not be deleted.--Jay1279 (talk) 03:29, 16 November 2020 (UTC)
@Jay1279: it is not correct and adds nothing useful. All what is displayed can also be displayed directly by the master template. JelgavaLV (talk) 21:51, 18 November 2020 (UTC)
  • Keep. I don't see the benefit of a merge for this particular case. - Knowledgekid87 (talk) 16:56, 16 November 2020 (UTC)
@Knowledgekid87: but what is the benefit of that template in this particular case? WP:INFOCOL is quite clear about the benefits. Why can all other Scandinavia work without wrapper and municipalities of Norway not? JelgavaLV (talk) 21:51, 18 November 2020 (UTC)
  • Replace, badly maintained and mix of current and former entities, which make matters worse. As the proposer wrote, no evidence that CET and ISO are correct for all the items. Also the template doesn't seem to add anything useful what could not be done with the master infobox. @Pigsonthewing and Frietjes: there seems to be a tool for comparison? Does it compare the technical capabilities? If yes, can one of you perform an analysis? It says to visit Special:TemplateCompare which is a red link. JelgavaLV (talk) 21:51, 18 November 2020 (UTC)
    • JelgavaLV, it says to visit Special:TemplateCompare after installing the script. the script generates a list of parameters for each template and compares the lists. you have to have two templates. in this case, the script would not be helpful because {{Infobox Norway kommune}} maps everything to {{infobox settlement}} and by inspecting the code we can readily see the mapping (e.g., flag = image_flag). Template:Rashidun princes and princessesEdit

Template title is misleading. Leadership of the Rashidun Caliphate was an elected or appointed position. There was no hereditary succession and four of the five holders belonged to different families, hence there is no concept of princes or royalty. Looking up the individuals listed here alongside royal titles does not return any meaningful results. Alivardi (talk) 16:36, 22 November 2020 (UTC)

No matter what, they all were their sons and the daughters, thus the princes and the princesses, and these all four caliphs and their children had important and honored position in Sunni Islam. Rashidun The Rightly Guided (talk) 16:48, 22 November 2020 (UTC)
  • Agree with Alivardi. In fact, the legal case of Shuraih Al-Qadhi shows that neither Ali (RA) nor his sons (RA) had any special status, but were treated equally to commoners. The traditions of royalties didn't start until the Umayyads. Thus, this is an arbitrary category as far as academia is concerned. If Rashidun The Rightly Guided presents reliable sources that make this template important, I'll change my mind.VR talk 20:33, 22 November 2020 (UTC)

Old discussionsEdit

This template doesn't really make sense. "Editor note" is the default for any comment made anywhere. That fact doesn't need to be emphasised. Outside template space (sample transclusions on other doc pages etc) this only has 60 live usages since it was created, mostly on very old talk pages, and at a sample check none were legitimate usages. Unclear purpose low-usage template. ProcrastinatingReader (talk) 20:10, 21 November 2020 (UTC)

  • Comment It appears in multiple archived discussions; of its 474 live uses as of right now, 25 are archives of discussions. Zeke, the Mad Horrorist (Speak quickly) (Follow my trail) 04:26, 22 November 2020 (UTC)
It's not 474, you need to filter by template space then invert, because all other note templates transclude this due to the doc. Once you do that, you will get 60 live usages. ProcrastinatingReader (talk) 00:52, 28 November 2020 (UTC)
  • Delete per nominator, but subst into the few pages where it was genuinely used so those discussions continue to look exactly as they did before. User:GKFXtalk 13:52, 22 November 2020 (UTC)

Completed discussionsEdit

If process guidelines are met, move templates to the appropriate subsection here to prepare to delete. Before deleting a template, ensure that it is not in use on any pages (other than talk pages where eliminating the link would change the meaning of a prior discussion), by checking Special:Whatlinkshere for '(transclusion)'. Consider placing {{Being deleted}} on the template page.

There are several tools that can help when implementing TfDs. Some of these are listed below.

@Primefac: Thank you! Let myself or Gonnym know if you have any questions. I hope my table above will be useful in figuring out what needs to be kept, replaced, or outright deleted. And as Gonnym said, the new parameters are all ready to go once the merge has been made. - Favre1fan93 (talk) 16:38, 21 June 2020 (UTC)
I'll have to re-think the usage of the bot, though... {{Infobox reality talent competition}} is an infobox proper, while {{Infobox reality competition season}} is designed as a child/subbox. Some might be easy enough to convert into an {{infobox television}} usage, such as at Singapore Idol, but in places like World Idol it will need merging into the main IB. Primefac (talk) 15:53, 23 June 2020 (UTC)
Correct. Whatever had {{Infobox reality talent competition}} will ultimately now need to have {{Infobox television season}} as the infobox proper, and the {{Infobox reality competition season}} as a child/subbox through |module1=. If I can help define or clarify anything for you to help you with the bot, let me know. - Favre1fan93 (talk) 02:19, 24 June 2020 (UTC)
Doing... TheTVExpert (talk) 15:18, 30 June 2020 (UTC)

I've written some regex for AWB but my problem is that I don't know how (or even if it's possible) to set a whole row as a conditional check. Currently this fails if the template isn't written in this exact order. Any ideas? @Primefac: have any ideas?

Find: \{\{Infobox reality talent competition\n.*\|.*name.*=.*\n.*\|.*logo.*=\s?(.*)\n.*\|.*logo_alt.*=\s?(.*)\n.*\|.*first_aired.*=\s?(.*)\n.*\|.*last_aired.*=\s?(.*)\n.*\|.*judges.*=\s?(.*)\n.*\|.*coaches.*=\s?(.*)\n.*\|.*host.*=\s?(.*)\n.*\|.*cohost.*=\s?(.*)\n.*\|.*broadcaster.*=\s?(.*)\n.*\|.*competitors.*=\s?(.*)\n.*\|.*finalsvenue.*=\s?(.*)\n.*\|.*num_tasks.*=\s?(.*)\n.*\|.*image.*=\s?(.*)\n.*\|.*caption.*=\s?(.*)\n.*\|.*winner-name .*=\s?(.*)\n.*\|.*winner-origin.*=\s?(.*)\n\|winner-genre.*=\s?(.*)\n.*\|.*winner-song.*=\s?(.*)\n.*\|.*runner-name.*=\s?(.*)\n.*\|.*runner-image.*=\s?(.*)\n\}\}

Replace: {{Infobox television season\n| image = $1\n| image_alt = $2\n| module1 = {{Infobox reality competition season \n | host = $7\n | judges = $5\n | num_contestants = $10\n | winner = $15\n | runner_up = $19\n}}\n| network = $9\n| first_aired = $3\n| last_aired = $4\n}} --Gonnym (talk) 21:27, 7 October 2020 (UTC)

Oof, that's a bit nuts. I'll try to dig into that regex soon, but I'm starting to think that using an AWB module to save, store, and modify those parameters to convert the template use might be the best way forward. The other thing we should probably do is find out where the template is used alongside {{infobox television}}, since we shouldn't convert it to "season" if that's there (instead, just folding it in). Primefac (talk) 22:10, 7 October 2020 (UTC)
@Gonnym and Primefac: maybe an oversimplification, but since {{Infobox reality talent competition}} is now converted into a full wrapper, can't we just subst it? (after cleaning it up for subst, ofc)? ProcrastinatingReader (talk) 15:28, 17 October 2020 (UTC)
Template substitution isn't my strong side so if you know how to do it, then I'm all for it. --Gonnym (talk) 11:47, 20 October 2020 (UTC)
I know how to turn it into a subst-able wrapper, however I don't know how if it achieves the acceptable results here. Primefac has looked at specific cases above it seems, so he may be better placed than me to answer that part. But if it works, that makes achieving the merge easier than regex-hell. ProcrastinatingReader (talk) 23:27, 8 November 2020 (UTC)
In a word, yes; I think cleaning up post-merge will be easier than all of the complex silliness above. I'll put it on my list of things to do. Right after I make my list of things to do... Primefac (talk) 15:45, 10 November 2020 (UTC)
@Gonnym and Favre1fan93: I've made a substable wrapper in the sandbox based on your wrapper. Go to any transclusion, plug a /sandbox on the end (or change to {{Infobox reality talent competition/sandbox}} if it's using a redirect) and preview. This should be how it looked pre-wrapper. Then chuck a subst: in front and preview, and this is how it'd look being substed. By my eye, testing on a couple of pages, this all looks correct, however the winner's national origin isn't being mapped in the wrapper (Gonnym?). Templates for which the consensus is that they ought to be converted to some other format are put here until the conversion is completed.

To substituteEdit

Templates for which the consensus is that all instances should be substituted (e.g. the template should be merged with the article or is a wrapper for a preferred template) are put here until the substitutions are completed. After this is done, the template is deleted from template space.

To orphanEdit

These templates are to be deleted, but may still be in use on some pages. Somebody (it doesn't need to be an administrator, anyone can do it) should fix and/or remove significant usages from pages so that the templates can be deleted. Note that simple references to them from Talk: pages should not be removed. Add on bottom and remove from top of list (oldest is on top).
