The picture of the day (POTD) is a feature that is automatically updated each day with a featured picture on the English Wikipedia. Although it is generally scheduled by a small group of regular editors, anyone can contribute. If you have concerns about today's or tomorrow's POTD, please post at Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors. If you have concerns about an upcoming POTD, consider either fixing it yourself or posting at Wikipedia talk:Picture of the day.

John Sherman

John Sherman (May 10, 1823 – October 22, 1900) was an American congressman and senator from Ohio during the Civil War and into the late nineteenth century. He was the principal author of the Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890, which was signed into law by President Benjamin Harrison. His brothers included General William Tecumseh Sherman, Judge Charles Taylor Sherman and banker Hoyt Sherman. As a Republican senator, he worked on legislation to restore the nation's credit abroad and produce a stable, gold-backed currency at home. Serving as Secretary of the Treasury in the administration of Rutherford B. Hayes, Sherman helped to end wartime inflationary measures and to oversee the law allowing dollars to be redeemed for gold. He returned to the Senate after his term expired, continuing his work on financial legislation, as well as writing and debating laws on immigration, business competition law and interstate commerce. In 1897, he was appointed Secretary of State by President William McKinley, but, due to failing health, he retired in 1898, at the start of the Spanish–American War.

This picture is a line engraving of Sherman, produced around 1902 by the Department of the Treasury's Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP), as part of a BEP presentation album of the first 42 secretaries of the treasury.

GuidelinesEdit

  1. The picture must already be a featured picture. To nominate a picture, see featured picture candidates.
  2. Featured images are currently selected in roughly the order in which they were promoted (i.e. a first in, first out order). See the featured pictures candidates archive for this order. Exceptions are made for anniversaries of events or for national holidays.
  3. Not all featured pictures will appear as POTD. Wikipedia:Picture of the day/Unused has a list of those that have been skipped.

POTD on your user pageEdit

You can insert the POTD on your user page or talk page by adding the text {{Pic of the day}}. It will be displayed in a box of no more than 600 pixels wide and will include a blurb based on the article in which the image appears. A version without text is also available via {{POTD}}.

It is also possible to create your own custom POTD layouts, in case the already-existing versions will not look good within your user page design. Mix and match the following components to make your own. This system will only work for POTDs selected beginning January 1, 2007. Be sure to replace [date] with an appropriate date value. For a dynamically updating version, use {{#time:Y-m-d}} (example: {{POTD/{{#time:Y-m-d}}|image}}).

Template Description Renders as
{{POTD/[date]|image}} The name of the image, without the File: prefix SHERMAN, John-Treasury (BEP engraved portrait).jpg
{{POTD/[date]|size}} The size of the image, without the trailing px 325
{{POTD/[date]|caption}} The image caption (blurb) John Sherman (May 10, 1823 – October 22, 1900) was an American congressman and senator from Ohio during the Civil War and into the late nineteenth century.

{{POTD/[date]|title}} A link to the article the image represents John Sherman
{{POTD/[date]|texttitle}} A linkless short caption, also useful as an alt attribute John Sherman
{{POTD/[date]|credit}} The credit line of the image, including the genre (e.g. photograph, painting) Engraving credit: Bureau of Engraving and Printing; restored by Andrew Shiva

There are two additional predefined layouts:

  • {{POTD/{{#time:Y-m-d}}|column}}: This has the image and caption above each other with no borders. Used on some of the Main Page alternatives and also suitable for user pages.
  • {{POTD/{{#time:Y-m-d}}|row}}: This has the image and caption encapsulated in (usually) a single table row. This is the version used on the current Main Page.

It is also possible to permanently feature a POTD for a selected day. Just add a specific value for the date you want. For example, today's POTD is {{POTD/2019-10-22|image}}. Likewise, you can use date parameters with the other templates as well. If you like the pre-made formats, you can use date parameters there as well, like this: {{Pic of the day|date=2019-10-22}} or {{POTD|date=2019-10-22}}. Again, this system will only work for POTDs selected beginning January 1, 2007.

Usage

Random POTDEdit

Use {{User:My Chemistry romantic/Templates/Random POTD}} to display a randomly selected POTD.

{{User:Tyw7/picofday}} also displays a randomly selected POTD, but without the header and footer.

POTD thumbEdit

When you want to display the POTD like an ordinary thumbnail, similar to {{WP:Wikimedia Commons/POTD}}, you can use {{POTD Wikipedia}}. For instance, if you want a thumbnailed version, floated right, you can use {{POTD Wikipedia|float=right|title=yes|thumb=yes}}.

Older POTDsEdit

If you want to permanently include a POTD that was selected between November 1, 2004 and December 31, 2006, use the following: {{Wikipedia:Picture of the day/[month] [day], [year]}} or {{Wikipedia:POTD/[month] [day], [year]}}. For example, {{Wikipedia:Picture of the day/December 31, 2006}}.

POTDs selected from May 2004 through October 2004 are only accessible in month-at-a-time archives and can only be placed on user pages by using standard image syntax.
