Requests for permissions

This page enables administrators to handle requests for permissions on the English Wikipedia. Administrators are able to modify account creator, autopatrolled, confirmed, file mover, extended confirmed, mass message sender, new page reviewer, page mover, pending changes reviewer, rollback, template editor rights and AutoWikiBrowser access.

Editors wishing to request a permission flag here should do so following the procedure below. Editors requesting permissions are advised to periodically revisit the requests page, as notifications will not always be given after a decision is made. Editors should not expect their request to be answered right away and should remember to be patient when filing a request. To find out what permissions your account has, go to Special:Preferences, where your permissions are listed in the user profile tab under "Member of groups".

Requests for permissions are archived regularly; please see Wikipedia:Requests for permissions/Archive for an index of past requests.

User groups

  • Account creator (add requestview requests): The account creator flag is granted to users who are active in the request an account process. The flag removes the limit on the maximum number of new accounts that can be created in a 24 hour period. It also allows users to make accounts with names similar to other accounts. The account creator flag is only given to users who participate in the ACC process and may be removed without notice should a user's participation in the account creation process cease.
  • Autopatrolled (add requestview requests): The autopatrolled flag is granted to users who are active in the creation of new articles. This tool is granted so their creations are auto patrolled in Special:NewPages. Unlike other requests, any user may nominate an editor for Autopatrolled, even without that user's consent. A user who wishes to have this flag generally should have created at least 25 articles and must be trusted, experienced, and must have demonstrated they are familiar with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines, especially WP:BLP and Wikipedia:Notability.
  • AutoWikiBrowser (add requestview requests): AutoWikiBrowser is a semi-automated MediaWiki editor for Microsoft Windows, designed to make tedious repetitive tasks quicker and easier. It is essentially a browser that automatically opens up a new page when the last is saved. When set to do so, it suggests some changes (typically formatting) that are generally meant to be incidental to the main change. Please read the quick guide on the main page before requesting permission. This is not a true user right, but access needs to be granted by administrators just like other permissions. If approved, your name will be added to the CheckPage. Users with under 250 non-automated mainspace edits or 500 total mainspace edits are rarely approved. You will need to give a reason for wanting AWB access.
  • Confirmed (add requestview requests): The confirmed flag may be granted to new users who have not yet hit the threshold for autoconfirmed status. These are users who have not had both 10 edits and 4 days experience. People with this flag can upload files and edit semi-protected pages before hitting the autoconfirmed flag. Users requesting this flag must indicate clearly why they should be exempted from the customary confirmation period.
  • Event coordinator (add requestview requests): The event coordinator user right allows editors to create multiple new accounts, and to temporarily confirm accounts so that they can create new articles.
  • Extended confirmed (add requestview requests): The extended confirmed flag is normally automatically added to accounts after 500 edits and 30 days, but may be added to legitimate alternate accounts of users that already have this access. The flag allows users to edit pages under extended confirmed protection.
  • File mover (add requestview requests): The file mover user right is intended to allow users experienced in working with files to rename them, subject to policy, with the ease that autoconfirmed users already enjoy when renaming Wikipedia articles.
  • Mass message sender (add requestview requests): Mass message sender enables users to send messages to multiple users at once. This flag is given to users who have made requests for delivery in the past, clearly showing an understanding of the guidance for use.
  • New page reviewer (add requestview requests): The new page reviewer user right allows users to mark pages as patrolled and use the page curation toolbar. At administrators' discretion, the right may be accorded on a time limited basis or indefinite.
  • Page mover (add requestview requests): The page mover user right allows users experienced in working with article names to move them, subject to policy, without leaving behind a redirect. They may also move all subpages when moving the parent page(s). General guidelines include making 3,000 edits and 6 months of editing history. At administrators' discretion, the right may be accorded on a time limited basis or indefinite.
  • Pending changes reviewer (add requestview requests): The reviewer flag is granted to users who are experienced enough with Wikipedia editing and its policies for contributing to the process of reviewing articles placed under pending changes.
  • Rollback (add requestview requests): Rollback enables users to remove vandalism much more quickly and efficiently than by undoing it. Users who do not demonstrate an understanding of what constitutes capable vandalism fighting, either because they have no or little history of doing so, or show a poor ability to discern between good and bad faith edits will not be granted this right. Also, it is unlikely that editors with under 200 mainspace edits will have their request granted. For a more detailed explanation of rollback and information about when it is appropriate to use the tool, see Wikipedia:Rollback. For information about the technical details of the feature, see here.
  • Template editor (add requestview requests): The template editor flag allows users to edit protected templates and Lua modules. General guidelines for granting include making at least 1,000 edits overall (with at least 150 to templates or modules), being a registered user for over a year, and having a record of successfully proposing significant edits to several protected templates. Users should demonstrate proficiency with template syntax and an understanding of the need for caution when editing heavily-used templates.

Handled elsewhere

Several permissions are requested and handled elsewhere:

Removal of permissions

If you wish to have any of your permission flags (except administrator) removed, you should contact an administrator. If you want your administrator flag removed, you should contact a bureaucrat.

This is not the place to request review of another user's rights. If you believe someone's actions merit removal of a permission flag, you should raise your concern at the incidents noticeboard.

The bureaucrat, checkuser, and oversight flags are removed at meta:Steward requests/Permissions. Stewards will typically not carry out such requests unless they are made on behalf of the Arbitration Committee, by a user who is requesting their own access be removed, or in cases of an emergency.

To make a request for a permission, click "add request" next to the appropriate header and fill in the reason for wanting permission.

Any editor may comment on requests for permission.

Administrators are permitted to grant account creator, autopatrolled, confirmed, event coordinator, file mover, mass message sender, page mover, pending changes reviewer, rollback and template editor flags to any user who meets the criteria explained above and can be trusted not to abuse the tool(s). Administrators may either grant these permissions permanently or temporarily. For convenience, a bot will automatically comment with relevant data if the user does not meet configurable qualifications. Even if the bot does not comment, administrators should review the user's contributions and logs to ensure the tools will be used appropriately and check for any indication of potential misuse.

Once an administrator has granted a permission or decided to deny a request, they should add {{done}} or {{not done}} respectively under the request with their comments. If a user already has the requested permission, or is autoconfirmed and requesting confirmed, {{already done}} should be used. N hours after the last comment was made (as specified by the config), the request will be archived automatically: approved requests will be placed here; declined requests will go here. See User:MusikBot/PermClerk#Archiving for more information on archiving functionality.

Current requests

Account creator

I was recommended top priority to request this by an user. According to my edit counter I have created at least 60 pages on Wikipedia. Jhenderson 777 17:17, 20 November 2020 (UTC) Jhenderson 777 17:17, 20 November 2020 (UTC)
@Jhenderson777: The conversation on your talk page that led to this is troubling. This right exists so that editors who regularly create large numbers of uncontroversial pages do not add an undue burden the new page patrol backlog. It is not a way to avoid scrutiny of your creations by others – like all edits, they can and should be reviewed by your fellow editors. If you disagree with the unnamed "particular NPP user" (Onel5969, I assume – courtesy pinging them now) who found fault with your article, there are many ways to resolve that within the normal consensus-building processes. The last thing you should do is try to get autopatrolled to avoid scrutiny in future.   Not done, and I am also revoking autopatrolled from Haleth. – Joe (talk) 18:04, 27 November 2020 (UTC)
My sincerest apologies for the rushed autopatrol request. I was doing various contributions that day I requested it if I remember correctly. Also busy in real life too. I brushed off what was done to me but what was done to Haleth seemed kind of harsh. He just recommended it to me like another user did to him and I stand by him as deserving the autopatrol. Hence why I brought it up to Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard. Hope all can be forgiven! Jhenderson 777 00:22, 28 November 2020 (UTC)

The articles created by me do not have any issues with notability/sources/copyvio or any other problems that one can find in new articles. I generally create biographical articles. The complete list of creations can be accessed at User:Amkgp/creations. I hope that, by becoming autopatrolled, I can reduce the workload for the new page reviewers.   Not done for the same reasons as the last three times [1][2][3]. That you made this request just long enough after the last one that MusikBot didn't automatically flag it does not exactly rebut Swarm's concern that you are trying to game PERM. – Joe (talk) 18:29, 27 November 2020 (UTC)

@Primefac: Please note that this user has also requested rollback, PCR, autopatrolled, and NPR with the same rationale. Anarchyte (talkwork) 04:37, 22 November 2020 (UTC)
I created a lot of new articles, many of them related to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Mostar-Duvno. I tend to create many more articles on the subject, and do more articles related to the Catholic Church in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Catholic Church in Croatia. These will include hundreds of new articles, major modifications on already existing articles and so on. I've already worked on Paškal Buconjić and have largelly improved other articles unrelated to this topic (Sheng Shicai, Mahmut Muhiti etc.). I've made many minor edits on these articles, that included minor fixes or improvements I later saw as more fitting. Since I'll be working on so many articles at once, I'd like to use a simpler method to implement minor improvements to them all instead by visiting one by one. --Governor Sheng (talk) 12:35, 23 November 2020 (UTC)
But you havent explained what these edits might be. AWB is used for non-contraversial similar edits across many pages, but im very worried about mass-creation of hundreds of pages. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 18:13, 27 November 2020 (UTC)

Not done – Hi, and thank you for creating an account to edit Wikipedia. Although I fully understand your desire to dive right in, many of our articles are semi-protected because they are controversial, prone to vandalism, or other reasons. As a new editor with few edits, it might be wise to discuss your edits on the article talkpage in order to gain consensus for your edits, and then use {{Edit semi-protected}} to request the edit be performed. I only recommend this until you are used to the challenges of reliable sources, the biographies of living persons policy, and other similar policies. The good news is that fewer than 5 percent of Wikipedia articles are protected; this means that 95 percent of the articles can use your help right now! — JJMC89(T·C) 16:37, 27 November 2020 (UTC)

@Primefac: Selfstudier came here at my suggestion. He/she doesn't want to move pages, but only wants to add editnotices. It's either this or template-editor. There are too few editors in ARBPIA who have the power to add editnotices, even though they are required for ARBPIA enforcement. Zerotalk 13:30, 27 November 2020 (UTC)
I didn't make myself very clear, I want to be able to add ARBPIA 4 related edit notices as in /ArbCom Arab-Israeli editnotice//Arab-Israeli Arbitration Enforcement}/ I can place the second one but not the first, the need to do this happens reasonably frequently,COVID-19 pandemic in the State of Palestine, for example.Selfstudier (talk) 13:34, 27 November 2020 (UTC)
How many pages do you expect to be editing? Primefac (talk) 17:25, 27 November 2020 (UTC) (please do not ping on reply)
I don't really know, there are thousands of pages in IP area, when I come across cases, I have been adding the second template because I didn't get that you needed the first one for it to be 100% effective and when I had cause to ask about it, I found out I couldn't do it anyway. Arbpia 4 is quite recent so I don't know how many pages are affected, there is a new thing as well, where the notice is added in respect of only part of a page. I have moved pages before as well but I don't expect to be doing any of these things with any frequency, editing is more my thing. Don't worry, I won't abuse the privilege.Selfstudier (talk) 19:09, 27 November 2020 (UTC)

I watch a few high-edit-volume pages that have pending changes protection, and I pretty commonly notice a bit of a delay in accepting or rejecting revisions at these pages, which suggests that more pending changes reviewers would be useful there. The major example is Politics (as I write this there is a review pending here), and another major example is Capitalism. I have very strong knowledge of WP:BLP policy from writing hundreds of BLPs, which has given me a solid background in preventing WP:ATTACKs and WP:Libel as I've helped protect a number of high-visibility BLPs (probably my best sustained BLP protection efforts over the course of months/years have been at Jon Lovett, Tara McGowan, and Sarah Cooper; I also do plenty of non-BLP vandalism prevention, for example at political party). I also have a solid grounding in Wikipedia's copyright policies, both from trying to make sure that photographs added to pages I write are acceptable, and from very regularly encountering copied text (I even caught some plagiarism on the portuguese wikipedia once!). Hello. I have about 700 edits and no blocks. I am interested in getting more involved in Wikipedia cleanup tasks. Pending changes looks like the learning curve is easier than some other areas, so I figured I'd apply. If accepted, I look forward to helping out. Thanks. – Novem Linguae (talk) 11:07, 25 November 2020 (UTC)

I am active in recent changes patrol and countering vandalism. I have a number of pending changes protection articles on my watchlist and would also like to help out in the backlog of reviewing pending changes. I have also gone through all the relevant policies and guidelines. Roller26 (talk) 17:37, 25 November 2020 (UTC)

Occasionally, I come across few articles I am interested in with pending revisions, but I find myself unable to help them out. Although most of these revisions are taken care of within minutes, (sometimes, and that truly happens very rarely) I feel like I could do that myself (actually when I find it in my area of coverage for I do not pay attention to other fields. Anyway, thanks in advance. I don't mind if the request is turned down. To my knowledge, there really is no pressure on the system right now. Mosesheron (talk) 20:39, 26 November 2020 (UTC)

Hi! During my recent changes patrolling, sometimes I come across a page that has pending changes protection; I’m usually not sure what to do in situations such as those other than hope someone with pending changes reviewer privileges will decide and continue with my work. I’m willing to both work in this field on Wikipedia to reduce the number of pages listed in the pending changes backlog and to accept or decline pending changes I see during my recent changes patrolling. This’ll give me something other to work on and help out with, so to speak. I’ve read WP:Reviewing pending changes thoroughly and know both the criterion expected for classifying whether specific changes should be declined or accepted and what’s expected of me with this permission. Thanks! Silikonz (💬🖋) 21:01, 26 November 2020 (UTC)

Hello, I've been editing Wikipedia for quite a while and most of my edits comes from patrolling my watch-list (which has nearly 2,000 articles) and from patrolling related changes from Tamil film categories (which are usually prone to disruption). I've often come across articles with pending changes and I usually revert them if they don't go well with the policies. I have read Wikipedia:Reviewing pending changes. This permission will help me to review pending changes in my watch-list and I'am willing to help out with the Pending Changes backlog. Thank you. SUN EYE 1 11:05, 28 November 2020 (UTC)

I'd like to help clear backlogs of pending changes awaiting review. On recent changes patrols I've already been reverting obvious vandalism and non-constructive edits on such pages. Pahunkat (talk) 17:35, 28 November 2020 (UTC)

When I patrol recent changes to revert vandalism, I often encounter vandalism or other unconstructive edits as pending changes (which I quickly revert anyway). Very often, I see these buried in the “hours old” end of my filter. Equipping me with this tool would let me help reduce the backlog as another area I can contribute. I would like to become a pending changes reviewer. I have recently retired so I have a lot more time to devote to Wikipedia. Reviewing pending changes seems to be a good "entry level" step to begin moving beyond just making my own edits to articles. PopePompus (talk) 06:22, 30 November 2020 (UTC)
@PopePompus: Pending changes requires the user to understand content policies and how to distinguish vandalism. Currently, I do not see many counter-vandalism edits in your contributions. Would you be willing to reapply in a few months time when you have more experience in the relevant areas? Regards, Anarchyte (talkwork) 08:17, 30 November 2020 (UTC)

Hello, I patrol recent changes and sometimes encounter pages with pending changes. Some of them take quite a lot of time to be either approved or disapproved. So I think it would be helpful if I had this right, as then I would be instantly able to approve, disapprove changes.Kajjul (talk) 13:12, 30 November 2020 (UTC)

I have been patrolling the Recent Changes page for a bit now, and have been reverting vandalism and other problematic edits made. I believe if I have the rollback permission, I'll be able to fixed vandalism faster than before. I love how you say "without even yet having met the formal requirement of 200 mainspace edits", even though I was 3 edits away when I submitted the request, about 20 edits over when you declined the request, and how there isn't any "formal" requirement; it's just "you may not get it if you have less". I find this situation so funny. Lmao JMVR1 🗪 🖉 📫 14:01, 30 November 2020 (UTC)

I want this permission only to revert obvious vandalism and edits that absolutely need to be revert, I think of this right more faster than Twinkle and of if may be for probation.

Hi F5pillar, now that you have chosen to run through a CVA training, I recommend not to request rollback earlier than it has been finished. If the mentor is inactive, please consider contacting someone else from the CVA project to take over the training/evaluation. If an experienced CVA teacher recommends granting rollback earlier, please let me know. ~ ToBeFree (talk) 23:58, 27 November 2020 (UTC)

Hi! On behalf of my primary account, I'd like to request rollback permissions for roughly the same reasons, if it's possible, since they're applicable when I'm editing using my alt account as well. I'll be happy to confirm anything. Thanks! Silikonz (alternate account) (💬🖋) 01:01, 27 November 2020 (UTC)

  • Hi Silikonz/Silikonz-alt, please confirm this specific request by adding a comment with your main account below. Please explicitly confirm that you would like to add the rollback permission to an account that was apparently created to reduce the amount of damage in case of an account compromise. I'll do this, but it seems to be slightly conflicting with the original account creation idea. ~ ToBeFree (talk) 23:52, 27 November 2020 (UTC)
Comment: @ToBeFree: Hi. Yes, Silikonz-alt is my alternate account. Re your thoughts on this - would it be possible to revoke rollback permissions from Silikonz-alt and then block it immediately if any administrator sees a misuse of them? Thanks. Silikonz (💬🖋) 00:56, 28 November 2020 (UTC)
Thanks, Silikonz. Yeah, that's not the problem – it's just about the time until a block happens. It can take hours or days until malicious rollbacks are identified as an account compromise. It can take thousands of Huggle reverts until someone blocks the account. It's your choice, I just need a clear "yes" or "no" :) ~ ToBeFree (talk) 01:12, 28 November 2020 (UTC)
@ToBeFree: Oh, OK. If that's so, no. Never mind. No need to risk it. :) Silikonz (💬🖋) 01:20, 28 November 2020 (UTC)

Much of wiki-energies are spent in countering vandalism on Wikipedia. It’s not been long that I came to know of this fact. My sudden and curious visits on recent changes page in the last few days made me realize the massive scale at which vandalism is being practiced on Wikipedia by so many heartless (and indeed sarcastic) people from around the globe. I know my growing interest in this field will eventually fade away within couple of days. But I could extend a helping hand whenever I could to protect this knowledge repository that I believe to be a charity to the humanity at large. That, of course, is limited to the confines of my editing interests (I won’t cross this line for a conviction I dearly hold). Although Twinkle (the tool that I am using now) is pretty useful, an attached right, I think, would make it a lot more easy. I could even use Huggle, which I really want to. And yes, I am fully aware of rollback user right and its application on Wikipedia. Thanks. Mosesheron (talk) 12:21, 29 November 2020 (UTC)
Ah, I forgot to mention something. This was the only instance that I came close to an edit warring in my entire experience. Anyway, this discussion that I have erased from talk page peacefully resolved the issue. Mosesheron (talk) 14:55, 29 November 2020 (UTC)

Not done It's good that you're back but, with just 2 edits following a gap of 2 years, and less than 20 edits since rollback was taken from you, it's too soon to be regranting rollback rights. Give it a few months and a track record of contributing in that period, then there should be every chance your next request will go through. Cabayi (talk) 13:58, 29 November 2020 (UTC)

My main interest in this permission is RCP, which is what I do on-wiki when not otherwise working on a dedicated project/page/article. I have a good track record of AIV reports, RFPP requests, and reverting vandalism or unconstructive edits. If any user, especially admins or long-time users, have a question about my conduct or thought processes, I'm open to questions and discussion regarding them. Thanks for your time and consideration.
