World Pride New YorkEdit
Hey,
after a hiatus from Wiki events I wanted to set everything up for Wiki participation in World Pride New York 2019. I think I talked to you about this in Cape Town. For this I wanted to ask you whether you could again tell me the name of the hotel that WMNYC has already collaborated with? The human rights conference which will probably be the most interesting part for us would take place from 24th to 25th of June. The opening ceremony will be on the 26th and the final parade on the 30th.
So we would probably reserve places at the hotel from 24th to 30th of June for a group of let's say 7 people. Could you maybe get in contact with the hotel and tell me whether that would be possible? Just because they already know you it would probably make more sense. You can cc me: saskia.j.ehlers@gmail.com
Also as you're working at the MoMA I wanted to ask if it would be possible to have an editathon at MoMA specifically for LGBT content (and maybe they have an archive / material that we could also use). That would then probably be on the 27th, 28th and 29th of June.
Additionally if WMNYC is already in contact with LGBT organizations or has sponsors in general it would be great if I could get their contact to ask if they would sponsor the event (in terms of flight/ train costs for participants)- public transport, hotel and food would most likely be covered by a Foundation grant.
Best regards and a happy new year --Sparrow (麻雀) 🐧 20:34, 1 January 2019 (UTC)

Honolulu Museum of Art edit-a-thonEdit
Aloha Pharos! We corresponded a few years ago, when I was helping to set up an edit-a-thon at WP:GLAM/Doris_Duke_Foundation_for_Islamic_Art. You helped connect us with User:TParis, whose guidance and expertise were invaluable. I'm planning another edit-a-thon, this time at the Honolulu Museum of Art: WP:GLAM/Honolulu_Museum_of_Art. It'll be on Friday, February 8, from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm HST. We'll be expanding articles about Hawai'i artists and arts organizations using a newly digitized collection of museum newsletters, among other sources. Two local Wikipedians, User:wmpearl and User:Mcampany will be helping out during the event. Please join us if you can! AwedOakSun (talk) 01:11, 11 January 2019 (UTC)

Hello. It appears your talk page is becoming quite lengthy and is in need of archiving. According to Wikipedia's user talk page guidelines; "Large talk pages become difficult to read, strain the limits of older browsers, and load slowly over slow internet connections. As a rule of thumb, archive closed discussions when a talk page exceeds 75 KB or has multiple resolved or stale discussions." - this talk page is 248.5 KB. See Help:Archiving a talk page for instructions on how to manually archive your talk page, or to arrange for automatic archiving using a bot. Thursday April 4 and Friday April 5: Translat-a-thon NYC 2019 @ LaGuardia Community College | |
Translat-a-thon NYC 2019 @ LaGuardia Community College is hosting the second annual Wikipedia Translatathon! At this event on Thursday evening and during the day Friday this week, anyone from the public is invited to LaGuardia to join students, professors, and CUNY faculty in translating Wikipedia articles among any languages which attendees understand. Themes for this event include public health and the history of New York City. New York City has a large immigrant population and great diversity of speakers of various languages. Among all schools in New York City, LaGuardia has the highest percentage of immigrant students, the highest percentage of students who speak a language other than English as their first language, and the greatest representation of language diversity. It is a strength of LaGuardia that it can present "Wikipedia translatathons", which are Wikipedia translation events. |

Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)Edit
ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.
Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.
We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.
For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron11598 21:04, 4 May 2019 (UTC)

The 'Chances' for PeaceEdit
Hey- I was looking at the Chance for Peace speech transcript on Wikisource and I realized- the Eisenhower library transcript is likely a flawed or "grammatically rectified" clean-up of the real speech. There's a whole preamble to the speech that isn't included. I'm only one sentence in, and there are two or three minor differences from what I'm hearing to what's in the transcript. I recommend giving a literal transcription of the words he used, and adding the grammatical differences in brackets if they are necessary and proper. I will do this later, but I invite you to give me your advice and join in on the editing (or do it yourself if you want to). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Or9I-qElmCY https://www.eisenhower.archives.gov/all_about_ike/speeches/chance_for_peace.pdf https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/The_Chance_for_Peace Geographyinitiative (talk) 04:05, 10 May 2019 (UTC)
Indefinite blocking of IP addressesEdit
Hi Pharos! I hope you're having a great day and that life is treating you well. :-) I'm messaging you because it came to my attention that you blocked IP user 2600:1017:B80F:B7C3:B04B:1068:F2AA:8247 indefinitely. I'm not sure if you did this on accident or not, but I wanted to bring it up to you informally anyways. :-) While the block was certainly justified due to the user's repeated threats and disruption, an indefinite block definitely wasn't. This IP address is allocated to Verizon, a mobile network carrier in the United States. This means that IP addresses will frequently change hands as devices connect and disconnect from their data network and travel from node-to-node, or tower-to-tower. The indefinite block, given its allocation and the fact that it will frequently be handed out to different users over the span of just hours means that it will cause much more harm than good by affecting innocent users who happen to be given that IP address next. There are circumstances that have called for indefinite IP address blocks in the past, but these situations are extremely rare occurrences. I've run into IP users who have needed an indefinite block maybe twice while I've been an admin... so, definitely not a common thing. ;-) Anyways, I just wanted to give you a heads up; the indefinite block has already been fixed by another admin - so no harm done. ;-) If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to let me know and I'll be happy to discuss them with you and help. I hope you have a great weekend and I wish you happy editing. :-D Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 02:59, 11 May 2019 (UTC)

I keep getting alerts that the image has been marked for speedy deletion because it's not being used on any article, when it should be displaying here but isn't for reasons I don't understand, since I'm not sure what's wrong with the wiki markup to prevent it. --Scottandrewhutchins (talk) 19:36, 16 July 2019 (UTC)

Hy Richard, here's the Meta page of the campaign (and here is on Italian Wikipedia if you might need it). We have the page about the suggested articles and we also created Wikidata lists about models, fashion houses etc. Please add yours and add you as a coordinator/participant, and your affiliate as supporter. I also want to know more about the event about fashion you said that Wikimedia NY chapter organized about fashion, you can give a lot of input. --Camelia (talk) 09:30, 23 August 2019 (UTC)

How do I pay dues so I can vote for the Board?Edit
I sent this message to Megs: "Could you post the link where I can pay the $5 dues to be eligible to vote 9/25? Thanks. Vyeh (talk) 20:00, 16 September 2019 (UTC)" I haven't received a reply. When I first saw the agenda, there was a board election on it. Now there isn't. When is the board election? BTW, I'm not interested. I'd be very happy if the current board was for life. Vyeh (talk) 15:23, 24 September 2019 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) Hi Vyeh. You can do that online on the Wikimedia NYC website, but we've also typically taken dues on the day of the election. (i.e. online is preferred, but if someone forgets to sign up online, you can just bring $5 to the meeting). — Rhododendrites talk \\ 18:05, 24 September 2019 (UTC)

Saturday Nov 16: Wikipedia Asian Month Edit-a-thon @ Metropolitan Museum of ArtEdit
Saturday November 16, 12:30 pm - 4:30pm: Metropolitan Museum of Art Edit-a-thon | |
---|---|
The Wikipedia Asian Month Edit-a-thon @ The Met will be hosted at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Saturday November 16, 2019 in the Bonnie Sacerdote Classroom, Ruth and Harold D. Uris Center for Education (81st Street entrance) at The Met Fifth Avenue in New York City. The museum is excited to work with Wikipedia Asian Month for the potential to seed new articles about Asian artworks, artwork types, and art traditions, from any part of Asia. These can be illustrated with thousands of its recently-released images of public domain artworks available for Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons from the museum’s collection spanning 5,000 years of art. The event is an opportunity for Wikimedia communities to engage The Met's diverse Asian collections onsite and remotely. Asia Art Archive will host a sister event in Hong Kong next week.

1632 Rembrandt in Allentown, PennsylvaniaEdit
Pharos,
You're the closest person I know to being an expert who would know anything about this. The Allentown Art Museum has discovered in its Samuel H. Kress collection a 1632 Portrait of a Young Woman, Rembrandt van Rijn. Actually it was originally attributed by Kress as a Rembrandt about 1961, but then downgraded to "workshop of", and now after restoration by NYU, again attributed to Rembrandt.
Ref AP . See also Portrait of a Young Woman (Rembrandt). I was going to add the Allentown pic in there but, probably not yet.
Nationalmuseum Sweden, 1632
Looks like a pattern to me. I'll check this out further and will decide if there's anything to do about it. Smallbones(smalltalk) 16:23, 18 February 2020 (UTC)

100th Wikipedia Weekly Youtube Subscriber StubEdit
Hey, Safwan Morshed here. First of all, didn't know Wikipedia Weekly existed till my brother told me about it a couple days ago, and it looks pretty cool. Anyways, regarding the 100th sub stub, a youtuber widely known as Markiplier had started a channel called Unus Annus (latin for "one year") which is a channel which would be deleted after said timeframe from the date of its creation. He had worked with his friend Ethan Nestor on this channel, and they publish videos daily. In one of their daily videos, in which they had to be physically separated during this unfortunate situation, they decided they would do a Wikipedia race, that is, open 2 random articles and start from one and race to the other by clicking each link included or related to the article and its resulting articles. Well, at the end of the video, they found that all mentions of Ethan on Wikipedia were all under Mark's Wikipedia page. I thought it'd be neat if Ethan had his own stub article. Thanks, and keep up the neat stuff! Safan41 (talk) 20:11, 26 April 2020 (UTC)

This month, as part of Wikimedia NYC's commitment to the well-being of members, we will hold WikiWednesday online via Zoom videoconferencing! To join the meeting from your computer or smartphone, just visit this link. More information about how to connect is available on the meetup page. We look forward to seeing local Wikimedians, but would also like to invite folks from the greater New York metropolitan area (and beyond!) who might not typically be able to join us in person! This month, we'll check in on the global WikiCup race and have as featured speaker our local champion and frontrunner, who is trying to win it by writing as many new New York City articles as possible, as well as other local and global topics. Is there a project you'd like to share? A question you'd like answered? A Wiki* skill you'd like to learn? Let us know by adding it to the agenda.
We especially encourage folks to add your 3-minute lightning talks to our roster, and otherwise join in the "open space" experience! Newcomers are very welcome! Bring your friends and colleagues! |

Ynés Mexía - botanical specimens found with CC0Edit
Hi Richard. Found some of the specimen scans that have been released as CC0 by the Smithsonian. Found via DPLA and if you click all the way through to the original record they are CC0 labeled with a special footer. https://dp.la/search?q=%22Ynes%20Mexia%22 / Example: https://collections.si.edu/search/detail/edanmdm:nmnhbotany_13489631?q=record_ID%3Dnmnhbotany_13489631&record=1&hlterm=record_ID%3Dnmnhbotany_13489631 If you want to put them on Commons, go ahead. If not, I can do it and add a gallery to the Ynés Mexía page. Let me know what works best for you. Thanks! -Doreva Dorevabelfiore (talk) 02:00, 11 October 2020 (UTC)

Wikiconference North America 2020Edit
Thanks for helping organize the conference! I look forward to a community run alternative to Wonder and Zoom hosted on the Wikimedia platform, such as you mentioned to me during the conference. The social interface and ease of use of Wonder.me was good, but the unfree aspect of Telegram, Wonder, and Zoom makes it a non-starter for many. C.f.
You may already be well aware of this distinction, yourself, but even if so, its for us who know media technology to help educate the rest of the editors by leading them away from proprietary software, even if its free/gratis, to free/libre. Wikipedia is built on this very concept. Best Regards. Jaredscribe (talk) 22:59, 13 December 2020 (UTC)
- @Jaredscribe: Thanks for joining and contributing to our event, I'm aware of these issues and have been recently advocating for the development of a m:Wikimedia Social Suite.--Pharos (talk) 17:19, 14 December 2020 (UTC)
- Whoa! nice. An event like WCNA ought to be the perfect way to get editors onboarded to Jitsi and Mattermost, and similar tools instead of the commercial offerings. In an IRC #wikimedia-conference (i think that was it) I got called out for Soapboxing Free software for recent contributions to articles on Appropriate Technology and Sustainable Development. Still not yet reverted, though. There is a challenge because of unacknowledged POV:commercial in the mainstream industry press, and therefore real existence of WP:Systemic bias on wikipedia itself, of all places, against free software. Like not a single mention in either of those two articles? Thats a significant reason why your comrades are unaware of the ethical issues at stake, and they make decisions on the basis of mere convenience - which is a mistake. See my proposed criteria on m:Wikimedia Social Suite. Its not enough to do it right; we must explain why its the right thing to do. It only stays that way when the simple are made wise. I'm a content focused newb, but will definitely ally with you if I get more involved in future years.Jaredscribe (talk) 05:32, 15 December 2020 (UTC)

Online coachEdit
Hi, Richard, I know you're busy with high level org work, but during last week's Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/December 2020 a newbie was darn near begging for coaching of the kind done at non-plague-year edit-a-thons, so I got to thinking, and then through Quora I met User:Fuertebrazos whose Draft:Bloomingdale was declined last month. So, it seems there's a considerable demand for such tutoring. Where can I find suggestions? I expect sessions to be up to a couple hours, usually one on one, sometimes me and three or four learners. Screen share is a required feature. This is thinking of me as host, but if someone else is hosting such sessions, that might be even better. Jim.henderson (talk) 14:45, 20 December 2020 (UTC)
- So, I did some study (mostly Youtube) and decided Google Meet looks best for an ignorant host of small sessions with little planning or coordination. It seems to lack the ability to share a screen other than that of the original host of the session, which is probably a fairly small handicap. Jim.henderson (talk) 18:37, 20 December 2020 (UTC)
