Interview request: Your interactions with new editors

I'm contacting you about a study that I'm running with TheOriginalSoni exploring newcomer mentorship activities in Wikipedia. I'd like to ask you a few questions about your interactions with newcomers and to check how WP:Snuggle has been working for you. The interview and demo session will take 30 minutes to an hour depending on how much time we spend discussing things. If you're interested, let me know. If not, disregard this message and I won't bother you again.

Thanks for your consideration. --EpochFail (talkcontribs) 21:48, 2 September 2013 (UTC)

How can data in wikipedia showpage be different from data in source code?

Hi Addshore,

I'm confused with that data in wikipedia showpage is different from data in source code. For example, Gosen-Neu_Zittau.

The population on show page is 2,991 (31 December 2012), while source code is "|Einwohner = 2738 |Stand = 2006-06-30". And I can't get any information about “2,991” or “31 December 2012” in source code.

Thanks in advance! Krin —Preceding undated comment added 08:16, 6 September 2013 (UTC)

Hmm. I am also rather confused. I tried to change the population but the page itself did not update. I can only imagine it is something to do with the template. It is probably worth you asking at Template_talk:Infobox_German_location ·addshore· talk to me! 08:24, 9 September 2013 (UTC)

Evropský veřejný ochránce práv (Evropský ombudsman).

As you were last person to modify the page, we have a few suggestions:

It would be preferable if the Czech version could be entitled "Evropský veřejný ochránce práv (Evropský ombudsman)". Currently, it is entitled "Evropský ombudsman" which is not the term used by the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union, the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union and the Statute of the European Ombudsman.

Moreover, the 2003 statistics could be replaced by more recent ones available on the Ombudsman's webpage. In particular, in 2012, the most frequent categories of complaints (on the basis of inquiries closed) were equally transparence (access to documents and information requests) and the Commission as guardian of the Treaties (see the latest annual report : Ingaingute (talk) 09:23, 21 November 2013 (UTC)

European Ombudsman

I have a few suggestions for the Slovenian version of the European Ombudsman:

The Slovak version erroneously mentions that the European Ombudsman was created in 1992. Although the Treaty of Maastricht was in fact signed in 1992, and came into force in 1993, it would be more accurate to mention that the office was actually established only in 1995 when the first European Ombudsman was elected.

Moreover, it would be preferable if it could clearly state that complaints to the Ombudsman can be submitted by "any citizen of the Union or any natural or legal person residing or having his registered office in a Member State of the Union". The current version is confusing and does not mention citizens.

It further states that the Ombudsman carries out his activities "quite independently". It is not clear why the word "quite" is used.

In addition, the Ombudsman is "elected" by the European Parliament, not "appointed" (see Article 228 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union).

The correct spelling of the name of the first Ombudsman is "Jacob Söderman" (one "n").

It is further suggested to refer to "irregularities" rather than "incorectness" in the activities of EU institutions. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ingaingute (talkcontribs) 09:27, 21 November 2013 (UTC)

Quick Question

--Unstoppabel Unpredictable Ultra Super Saiyan 5 Sintex (talk) 21:28, 26 January 2014 (UTC)Gokufan8989 How do you create Userboxes and Infoboxes?

  • Example: How can I put this photo in an infobox?

<gallery> File:Spider-Man.jpg|like this image hwo may I use it in an infobox? </gallery> --Unstoppabel Unpredictable Ultra Super Saiyan 5 Sintex (talk) 21:28, 26 January 2014 (UTC)Gokufan8989

@Gokufan8989: Unfortunately, infoboxes are not standardized, so wikicode that works in one doesn't work in another. Each infobox template (e.g. Template:Infobox comics character) should contain instructions on how to add an image. See Spider-Man for an example of an article using this particular image in the infobox. Hope this helps! GoingBatty (talk) 17:55, 27 January 2014 (UTC)

Hello, thank you so much for, starting the wiki page on Chaser. I made an attempt to edit her page, which you over-wrote and realized I probably didn't do it correctly. I would like to correct the mention that Chaser was co- trained by Alliston Reid. That is completely incorrect. He had nothing to do with teaching her language, which many publications had incorrect. He was the collaborator on writing my fathers findings in the formal research paper that was published in December 2010. If you have a better way to present this, please do so and again thank you so much! As User:Addbot has not edited since August, can I assume that none of its tasks are currently active? In particular, orphan tagging (tasks 16 and 18), as I am working on an RfC about that. Thanks, Wbm1058 (talk) 17:50, 13 February 2014 (UTC)

Indeed this task and others are currently not active! Could you link me to the RFC? These tasks will likely be back and running in the next few months if consensus is still there. ·addshore· talk to me! 10:30, 14 February 2014 (UTC)
There has been a long-running discussion about orphan tagging, see:
I'm trying to do a more thorough analysis, so that the third RfC on this, which I've promised, results in the best possible solution at this time.
Between you, AutoWikiBrowser, Twinkle, and User:Svick's WikiProject cleanup listing, we have a lot of tools that identify and tag orphans. The problem is, editors are just treading water with de-orphaning as the backlog isn't shrinking significantly.
What I think is needed at this point, is more and better tools and reports to assist editors in de-orphaning, like User:Edward's User:Edward/Find link tool, and perhaps even de-orphaning bots could be developed.
Editors and readers may be understandably tired of seeing the orphan messages at the top of articles at this point. I'd like to appease them by hiding the message for those who don't want to see it, while causing minimal disruption to the existing tagging systems, until better de-orphaning systems can be developed. Wbm1058 (talk) 15:56, 14 February 2014 (UTC)
This is indeed one thing I noticed after my first orphan task was approved (for adding the tags) I added a lot of tags but not many were being removed hence my second task of removing the tags! Where on the first run I removed a surprising amount! This must have been around the time I added the 'Progress' section to the Orphaned articles category page.
I have to say after looking at this after a year of not being very active on the Orphan front I think great progress has been made! 50,000 less articles are tagged now compared with this time last year and only 100,00o to go as a whole is a good sign! Of course we have no idea how accurate these number actually are! ·addshore· talk to me! 16:11, 14 February 2014 (UTC)
From 122,500 orphans on 13 February 2013 to 121,092 orphans on 13 February 2014 is not much of a reduction. The reduction of 52,500 between 8 January–13 February 2013 was, I'm assuming mostly all due to your bot's edits. Maybe it's time for another run of task 18? Wbm1058 (talk) 17:44, 14 February 2014 (UTC)
FYI. See Wikipedia:Bot requests/Archive 58#Bot to remove orphan tags. So I guess we have three bots that remove orphan tags. Wbm1058 (talk) 03:48, 20 February 2014 (UTC)

Removing bot flag

Hi. Can you please explain why my bot (which is not active) had its bot flag removed? In other word, what is the benefit of removing the flag? It is not like I have violated any bot policies, or I ever would. I just find it discouraging to see the flag removed without prior notice.

Please {{ping}} me in your response. Thanks hujiTALK 19:27, 8 July 2014 (UTC)

@Huji:. Your bot was approved for the interwiki task here. Interwiki bots are not longer approved for use on enwiki. Please see Wikipedia:BON#Bot_that_are_inactive_for_the_last_2-4_years_and_may_lose_bot_flag. All bots that were approved for interwiki use have are now 'unapproved' and I have marked the majority of them as so today. In the process bot flags were also removed for the task as the bot again is not approved and should not be running with a bot flag. This does not stop you from getting the bot flag back in the future for a different task! ·addshore· talk to me! 23:47, 8 July 2014 (UTC)

My plan is to send out an note to all bots that have had their bot removed in the next few days once I am sure that I have removed all of the flags that can / should be removed. Naturally as none of these bots have edited in the past 4 years I do not feel rushed to send this note out. Bot flag on frwiki

As a bureaucrat on frwiki, I was checking the activity of the bots, and noticed that yours had been inactive for at least 6 months. It is not reasonable that an unmonitored account keeps a bot flag, as it may be more easily hacked. Do you wish to keep the bot flag? If this is the case, please tell me so (preferably on my talk page on frwiki, otherwise on my talk page on this project). Without any answer from you, the bot flag will be removed in one month.

New huggle 3.1 is going to be released soon

Hi addshore, we are to release a new major version of huggle, but we did receive almost no feedback from our beta testing team, which you are a part of (see It would be of a great help if you could download it (if you have windows, all you need to do is getting and putting it to a folder where you have installed huggle) and test it. You can always get a help with making it @ #huggle connect!

Major changes:

  • Multisite support - you can now log in to unlimited number of wikis in 1 huggle session and get a huge queue of all edits made to these wikis. This is good for smaller projects which gets overlooked often.
  • Ranged diffs - you can select multiple revisions and get a huge diff that display all changes done to them.
  • Fixes of most of bug reports we had so far

In case you found a bug, please report it to bugzilla: thank you! Petrb (talk) 09:58, 30 July 2014 (UTC)

Fields Medal page

Hello there,I'm that user who's been the victim of editing the Fields Medal page(i.e.I got blocked with charge of Vandalism.).I've got three question:1)When the current protected status of that page ends,Does the page current contents remain in place or they are replaced with the old version? 2)I've prepared a new and somehow comprehensive table about Fields medalists.I posted this table on the discussion section of the Fields Medal page, and I request for comments about this(If You come there and see my that table I will be really glad, and don't forget to put your comment about it down there!;-)),but so far, just one person did so.Is it normal? 3)Should I submit a request for edit to replace the new table with current one?Or should I wait for reaching a consensus?Thank You. An important message about renaming users

Dear Addshore,

I am cross-posting this message to many places to make sure everyone who is a Wikimedia Foundation project bureaucrat receives a copy. If you are a bureaucrat on more than one wiki, you will receive this message on each wiki where you are a bureaucrat.

As you may have seen, work to perform the Wikimedia cluster-wide single-user login finalisation (SUL finalisation) is taking place. This may potentially effect your work as a local bureaucrat, so please read this message carefully.

Why is this happening? As currently stated at the global rename policy, a global account is a name linked to a single user across all Wikimedia wikis, with local accounts unified into a global collection. Previously, the only way to rename a unified user was to individually rename every local account. This was an extremely difficult and time-consuming task, both for stewards and for the users who had to initiate discussions with local bureaucrats (who perform local renames to date) on every wiki with available bureaucrats. The process took a very long time, since it's difficult to coordinate crosswiki renames among the projects and bureaucrats involved in individual projects.

The SUL finalisation will be taking place in stages, and one of the first stages will be to turn off Special:RenameUser locally. This needs to be done as soon as possible, on advice and input from Stewards and engineers for the project, so that no more accounts that are unified globally are broken by a local rename to usurp the global account name. Once this is done, the process of global name unification can begin. The date that has been chosen to turn off local renaming and shift over to entirely global renaming is 15 September 2014, or three weeks time from now. In place of local renames is a new tool, hosted on Meta, that allows for global renames on all wikis where the name is not registered will be deployed.

Your help is greatly needed during this process and going forward in the future if, as a bureaucrat, renaming users is something that you do or have an interest in participating in. The Wikimedia Stewards have set up, and are in charge of, a new community usergroup on Meta in order to share knowledge and work together on renaming accounts globally, called Global renamers. Stewards are in the process of creating documentation to help global renamers to get used to and learn more about global accounts and tools and Meta in general as well as the application format. As transparency is a valuable thing in our movement, the Stewards would like to have at least a brief public application period. If you are an experienced renamer as a local bureaucrat, the process of becoming a part of this group could take as little as 24 hours to complete. You, as a bureaucrat, should be able to apply for the global renamer right on Meta by the requests for global permissions page on 1 September, a week from now.

In the meantime please update your local page where users request renames to reflect this move to global renaming, and if there is a rename request and the user has edited more than one wiki with the name, please send them to the request page for a global rename.

Stewards greatly appreciate the trust local communities have in you and want to make this transition as easy as possible so that the two groups can start working together to ensure everyone has a unique login identity across Wikimedia projects. Completing this project will allow for long-desired universal tools like a global watchlist, global notifications and many, many more features to make work easier.

If you have any questions, comments or concerns about the SUL finalisation, read over the Help:Unified login page on Meta and leave a note on the talk page there, or on the talk page for global renamers. You can also contact me on my talk page on meta if you would like. I'm working as a bridge between Wikimedia Foundation Engineering and Product Development, Wikimedia Stewards, and you to assure that SUL finalisation goes as smoothly as possible; this is a community-driven process and I encourage you to work with the Stewards for our communities.

Thank you for your time. -- Keegan (WMF) talk 18:24, 25 August 2014 (UTC)

Sarah J Price

Hi I've been advised to contact about the following - My Request for the undeletion of Sarah J Price - Welsh Playwright, film maker, TV, Film and West End actor, musician, reality star, sports journalist, comedy writer and stand up performer,(Edinburgh festival, NYC Comedy club) and regular international radio and TV guest. the page was originally merged with two other Sarah Price's in an act of vandalism, the swimmer was separated, but the two 'film' Sarah Price's remained as one, (proof of this vandalism still exists on the page Price under notable Price's the second Sarah Price links to the American film maker Sarah Price, however the information in that section all, but date of birth is in fact Sarah J Price) My attempt to get the page back up and running on its own was removed, the main reasons given for its deletion being; aside from some general confusion some of which I suspect was by the vandal, lack of any reliable evidence - one link was to an article which included a photograph of Ms Price on the West End stage as Frenchie in the musical Grease, and "I found lots of Sarah Prices, but not this one" the problem being because of Ms Price's varied career a fair few of the 'lots of Sarah Price's' were indeed her, she has also worked under several stage names, and both with and without the J since she began her career in early childhood. in light of her recent output as an actor and as a sport journalist in the USA and for France's Canal+ Tv channel I feel the page now merits being reinstated and updated -Thanks Jasperxj (talk) — Preceding undated comment added 02:28, 5 October 2014 (UTC)

Deleted article "Jeff Kent (author)"

Hello Addshore Just under two years ago, the above article was deleted. Since then, on occasions when I've had a bit of time, I've looked for independent references to the subject and have found a substantial number of them. I'd now like to put the references in the deleted article, with a view to its possible reinstatement. I've visited the article through the link you left me, but when I click "edit", only the key information in the right-hand side summary box of the article comes up. Do you know how I can open the whole article for editing (that is, putting the references in)? Thanks Snoobysoo Snoobysoo (talk) 22:44, 3 January 2015 (UTC)

My previous message was a false alarm, Addshore! I've just seen the toolbar on the right of the article, so I'm okay to add the references now. Thanks anyway. Snoobysoo Snoobysoo (talk) 00:19, 4 January 2015 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for January 11

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Jeff Kent (author), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Recorder. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Asking about recall

Asking admin candidates about being open to recall has been found to be unhelpful and decisive. Please don't do it. Thanks. Hipocrite (talk) 16:08, 15 January 2015 (UTC)

Interesting.... Where and when were such questions found to be unhelpful? ·addshore· talk to me! 17:04, 15 January 2015 (UTC)
Wikipedia_talk:Requests_for_adminship/Archive_164#Recall_blanket_voting links to a lot of the prior discussion. Hipocrite (talk) 17:40, 15 January 2015 (UTC)
Again, interesting. Personally I don't mind if an admin lists them-self as open to recall or not, its more about how they tackle the question that anything else. ·addshore· talk to me! 19:39, 15 January 2015 (UTC)

Deleted article "Jeff Kent (author)"

Hello Addshore Two years ago, the above article was deleted, primarily because of a lack of independent references. I've finally found the time to seek out such references and have now inserted many of them in the article, which you kindly stored for me to work on. I'd now like to have it put up for scrutiny, to see if it can be reinstated. Is that something that you would do from your end or do I need to submit it in some way? (I'm unsure of the actual resubmission procedure.) Thanks. SnoobysooSnoobysoo (talk) 17:52, 9 January 2015 (UTC)

Hi Snoobysoo! User:Orangemike restored the page for you! :) I have just gone and re attached the original page history and pub my sandbox history back where it should be. Enjoy! :) ·addshore· talk to me! 16:28, 10 January 2015 (UTC)
Thank you for awarding me the Citation Barnstar and for advising that the article should be restored. It's very pleasing to see it back online, now properly referenced. Obviously, I should now be able to be much more on the ball with any further contributions I should make on whatever subject on Wikipedia, so thank you for your advice and time for getting me on the right track.Snoobysoo (talk) 17:56, 11 February 2015 (UTC)

Classic Greece and Rome project

Hello, this is user Alchavers21. I was looking to get involved with the Classic Greece and Rome project for a class I am taking on Wikipedia. Since it looks like you have been active recently I was wondering how to get involved/which areas you feel need the most attention or edits/ideas for new articles or any areas that require the most revision. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Alchavers21 (talkcontribs) 20:49, 3 February 2015 (UTC)

Ancestry in Weidenau

Hello, I live in the United States and my fathers grandparents families were both from the Weidenau area of Siegen. I have an extensive history book on the Hoffman and Hermann families. However, I have been unable to track down anyone currently living there. My great Grandmother was 1 of 8 kids and the only one to leave Germany for the U.S.. I jnow I have many cousins there snd was wondering if Siegen University has a professor or knows of someone who can help me track down our relatives.

Hi. After migratingiw links to wikidata, there are many pages that still are not connected (e.g. [3]) Can something be done except manually connecting to wikidata? -- Bojan  Talk  03:14, 15 February 2015 (UTC)

There are still bots slowly working away at the lists as far as I know. I could probably throw something together to import all the remaining links if need be! ·addshore· talk to me! 14:22, 16 February 2015 (UTC)

Mike Kameron actually did the vocals here

But the songwriting talents of keyboardist Mike Kameron (who is also secretly responsible for the vocals here, rather than stated singer Sean Farber) achieves even greater distinction on somewhat slower, more diverse explorations such as "Cosmic Forge," — Preceding unsigned comment added by (talk) 07:53, 11 March 2015 (UTC)

I am experiencing problems unifying my Wikipedia accounts. I was able to sign in my French Wikipedia account probably where I first made my account on the 10th of January 2006. I clicked on the global account to try to unify my accounts.

It stated that I have two other accounts one on and one on when I enter the same passwords as for my French wikipedia accounts it says that the password is incorrect and when I try to recover the password via email I get nothing in my inbox (and junk).

Is it possible that I created the accounts back when Wikipedia did not require an email address? I am trying to unite my accounts so that I can contribute to both Wikipedias. I did not create a new account on this wikipedia in hope that I could unite my accounts. I think my IP address is dynamic and not static so it may change upon my next modification of this text. I could leave my e-mail address but if it is possible for bureaucrats to contact me on it.

Anyways the email address linked to my French wikipedia account is

Thank you very much for your help. (talk) 01:41, 12 March 2015 (UTC)

About Some crab species

Hi...I'm appreciate the way you edited the crab articles in Wikipedia. But, as my opinion it is good to make a separate article to each species. One example is species within the genus Oziotelphusa. The species within this genus are redirected to the genus itself. So, it is good to make separate articles to such species, because it will make the users very easy to study them. Because there are many references and publications about those species..

Thank You.. (User Talk:talk)

Wikipedias' statistical list

Hello from Georgian Wikipedia, first of all I want to thank you that your Acebot is working so well, and contributing to this page of Georgian Wikipedia. Now about my offer. As I found out your bot also updates statistics of the |RU Wikipedia's page — List of Wikipedias and I thought that it will be good if your bot also starts updating of the same page of Georgian Wikipedia (that page is in very bad condition :/). I will be waiting for your response, if you decide be sure I will help in everything that you will need. Thanks.--g. balaxaZe 07:41, 19 March 2015 (UTC)
