Rhodes joined the [[American Historical Association]] and was elected [[American Historical Association#Past presidents|its president]] in 1899 for a one-year term.
In the latter half of the 20th century, major new histories were published about the Civil War and Reconstruction from the viewpoint of the freed people. Those views differed from Rhodes' viewpoint, which represented the interests of former slave owners and their sympathizers.
