Founded some 1950 years ago as "Rhenanae Tabernae" along one of their roads by the Romans, it is famous for its [[Samian ware]] production and past. Remnants of the production are still visible. Moreover, the local museum is dedicated to [[pottery]] and Roman culture.
The [[Latin]] term "Rhenanae Tabernae" does literally mean "tavern" and "Rhine". Hence Rheinzabern was founded to be a place to rest for travellers on Roman roads.
