Summary

Image of character evolution in classical chinese, with hypothesized pronunciation from p.194 of "Early Chinese Writing" by William Boltz, in The World's Writing Systems ISBN 978-0-19-507993-7. Boltz argues that the character for 年 nián < *ˁznen "harvest, year" was formed by adding the character 人 rén < *znen "person" below 禾 "growing grain".

Converted to SVG.svg
This text image could be re-created using vector graphics as an SVG file. This has several advantages; see Commons:Media for cleanup for more information. If an SVG form of this image is available, please upload it and afterwards replace this template with {{vector version available|new image name}}. It is recommended to name the SVG file "Old chinese.svg" - then the template Vector version available (or Vva) does not need the new image name parameter.
