Ceci représente le premier octet de baryons regroupés selon le schéma SU(3) (« La voie octuple »). Sur cette figure reprenant la disposition conventionnelle :

  • I3 est l'axe de la composante d'isospin.
  • Q est l'axe de la charge électrique.
  • S est l'axe de l'étrangeté (« strangeness »).
  • Le contenu principal des particules en quarks est noté dans les cercles roses.
  • Le cercle rose coupé en deux représente les deux baryons notés en regard. Ils se distinguent par diverses propriétés, notamment la masse, qui ne figurent pas sur ce diagramme.

This shows the first baryon octet grouped according to the SU(3) scheme (« Eightfold way »). On this figure, in the standard layout :

  • I3 is the isospin component axis.
  • Q is the electric charge axis.
  • S is the strangeness axis.
  • The main quark content is indicated within the pink circles.
  • The pink circle split in 2 represents the 2 baryons indicated besides. They are distinct by several properties, notably their mass, which are not represented on this diagram.
